I have spent years working in schools — public and private — churches, and corporate campuses, delivering active shooter awareness and response training and assessing how a building would actually perform on its worst day. The gap between how safe an organisation feels and how safe it is comes down to a small number of unglamorous details: which doors are propped, who holds keys, what the front office can actually see, and whether anyone has ever stated out loud what they would do.
The training is not designed to frighten your staff, and I am deliberate about that. Fear is a poor instructor and it outlasts the session. Nobody bursts through a door. What people receive instead is a decision-making framework simple enough to survive panic, a clear assessment of their own building, and the authority to act rather than wait for permission.
For churches specifically, the tension is real. You exist to be open and to welcome anyone who walks in, and that is not something to engineer away. The work is determining how to remain genuinely open while a small number of people quietly know what to do. Usually that means a trained team, improved sightlines, and a plan for the nursery the volunteers have actually rehearsed.
Assessments are written plainly. You receive what I found, what remediation would cost, and what I would address first if the budget were mine — not a hundred-page document written to justify the invoice.
