Most of my career has been spent training personnel who do not get to choose whether to engage. In my previous company I built and ran a division exclusively for law enforcement, alongside tactical medicine and firearms divisions, because those three subjects stop being separate the moment something actually happens.

The problem for professionals is rarely a deficit of technique. It is that the technique was learned in a gym, at a comfortable distance, against a compliant partner, and then has to survive a real contact with a duty belt on, a partner nearby, a camera running, and a use-of-force policy you will be measured against afterward. So that is the environment we train in.

I have also worked protective details for principals whose safety was somebody's professional responsibility, from government officials through to public figures. That work demands a different discipline: the objective is that nothing ever happens, which means nearly all of the skill lives in the ninety-nine percent of the time when nothing is happening. Advance work, positioning, reading a room, and moving a principal who does not want to be moved.
